Admittedly you have to go through the Mont Blanc Tunnel which has a price but it's pretty easy. The poor visibility could have had something to do with it, as could the cloud sitting in in the valley over the town. We have been lucky enough to see and capture on camera some skiers playing in the wilderness of their natural habitat. When the weather is inclement they can usually be found in the trees where the visibility is better but when the sun comes out they can be seen in the open slopes of the mountain. Bookmark this page to keep up to date with the Chamonix Snow News or subscribe to posts at the bottom of the page. - [Ski Touring](https://www.skibreezy.com/category/ski-touring/) - Chamonix is a great place for ski touring (and backcountry snowboarding), simply to get beyond the lift lines or to explore the Mont Blanc Massif. The terrain around the Chamonix Valley is very varied which also makes it a great place to learn. Take a Mountain Guide and get out there for a couyple of days. There are loads of single day tours which take in a bit of climbing, a bit of boot packing, crampon work and rope work as well as navigation. Later in the winter season there are a series of Mountain Refuges open for touring between huts and there is also the famous Haute Route between Chamonix and Zermatt; a 7 day hut to hut trek through the mountains. - [Piste conditions](https://www.skibreezy.com/category/piste-conditions/) - Generally if you have combed, groomed snow under your feet you are on piste. Exceptions to that are Chamonix Valley where the piste could be covered in moguls (bumps made by skiers) or it could be an ungroomed run from the top top of Les Grands Montets. If you are on piste there should be numbered ,coloured marker poles on either side designating the difficulty of the piste and counting down until you reach the bottom. The higher the number the further you have to go. - [Off Piste Conditions](https://www.skibreezy.com/category/off-piste-conditions/) - There is no such thing as “slightly off-piste”. A Mountain Guide friend once said that it is like being pregnant, “you either are or you’re not”. If you are not on a piste then you are off it. Off piste terrain in Chamonix varies from uber steep, trees to glacial with crevasses. Do not follow others tracks! Especially since people have started using the kites to jump off cliffs and over crevasses. - [Les Grands Montets](https://www.skibreezy.com/category/les-grands-montets/) - On the north side of the Chamonix Valley, Les Grands Montets does not get sun until later in the day and only then in selected areas. The cold helps keep the off piste snow in good condition but can make the pistes icy, especially in the early mornings in spring. Les Grands Montets is accessed from Argentiere near the head of the Chamonix Valley. You can take the train but then there is a 10 minute walk to the lift station (fine in bording boots but not in ski boots) or take the bus which will drop you straight outside. Years ago I remember Grands Montets having a single groomed piste from the top of every lift (except the top top). All the rest of the terrain was ungroomed off-piste skiing and snowboarding. Since then they have added a handfull of new pistes and updated the odd lift but generally the lifts are there to access the off-piste. WARNING – A red run at Grands Montets is probably more like a black anywhere else in the valley. Fantastic for advanced skiers and boarders and good for intermediates but not at all good for beginners. There are runs marked as blue but honestly they are on the severe end of blue. Favourite restaurant is the Lognon Refuge, check they are open and make a reservation, it is a favourite for the mountain guides to take their clients to. Strong intermediates and advanced can ski in and out but weaker skiers and boarders should walk back up to the piste to ski back to Lognon (midstation). - [Les Houches](https://www.skibreezy.com/category/les-houches/) - Les Houches is a great family ski area. It is a little lower than the other domains in the valley but is covered in pistes for all abilities and little restaurants and buvettes. The top of the hill is a little flat in places which is worth snowboarders avoiding if possible. The nursery slopes are at the top of the hill (Prairion Lift) which is really great as beginners get to experience skiing up the mountain. There is loads of “tree line” skiing which is great on poor visibility days as it helps with perspective and to be able to see. The off piste is great on powder days if you can cope with tree skiing (aim for the gaps). Though it is worth learning the terrain from someone else rather than following tracks as it is very easy to end up in a whole world of bother. There are 3 lifts up from the valley floor; a gondola at Prairion which is super speedy and loads of parking; stay on the bus to the end of the line to get here. There is a cable car at Bellevue in the centre of Les Houches which is slower with very poor parking; the bus goes past here to get to Prairion. Lastly there is the chair lift which goes from above the bottom of the Prairion, limited parking and mostly used by locals; then bus does not go to here. Les Houches is not an easy place to get skiing from the train station so do not bother. Favourite restaurant is the Vieilles Luges under the Maison Neuf chair lift, slightly off piste and accessed by a skiable track, amazing food in a funky cabin with prices to match. Even if you only call by for a very memorable hot chocolate it is well worth the effort. - [La Flegere](https://www.skibreezy.com/category/la-flegere/) - La Flegere is on the south facing slopes of the Chamonix Valley and gets a lot of sun. A couple of black runs and lots of reds, it has quite challenging terrain. There is a great green run here and a couple of restaurant options so is good for beginners getting off the nursery slopes. La Flegere also give access to some amazing off piste and ski touring. Be warned, there are cliff faces and the off-piste is difficult to learn as over half is not visible from the lift system. La Flegere is easily accessible by bus and by train though it is worth getting there early as the lift from the valley floor is slow and queues can build up mid morning. - [Le Brevent](https://www.skibreezy.com/category/le-brevent/) - Le Brevent is on the south facing side of the valley so enjoys a lot of sunshine. The main lift from the valley was replaced a few years ago and is super speedy (for Chamonix) however the car park at the lift station is super expensive. At the base of the main lift there is the Savoy nursery slope which is great for complete beginners. The main area up the mountain does have a nursery slope but it is now a little disconnected as you need to hike to get to it from the top of the main gondola. Great area for intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders. Le Brevent was the original venue for the olympic ski competition and has hosted the RED BULL extreme skiing competitions more recently. Needless to say that there is some amazing off-piste terrain accessible from the lifts and also some great ski touring and backcountry boarding routes for all abilities. The piste down to the valley bottom is marked as a black but is on the tame end of the scale; it is quite narrow in places with switchbacks so if it is open it is better done early in the day rather than at the end with everyone else who wants to ski off the mountain. If you are thirsty at all DO NOT go to Altitude 2000 restaurant by the nursery slope. It is the most expensive mountain restaurant in the valley. Years ago I got stung 13 € for a coke and have never been back since. - [Domaine de Balme](https://www.skibreezy.com/category/domaine-de-balme/) - Domaine de Balme is at the head of the Chamonix valley beyond Argentiere. It is accessible from the village of Le Tour and also from Vallorcine. It is great to get your legs going on day 1 of a week; big wide open blues and reds plus loads of off-piste for the expert skiers though not easy to learn as it is not visible from a lift. Not great in poor visability as there is no treeline skiing to help with perspective. Easily accessed by bus to Le Tour village and by train to Vallorcine. Our favourite way to get there is the train to Vallorcine, it’s a beautiful ride and you don’t play with traffic, there is very rarely a queue at Vallorcine and the lift takes you strainght into the tree skiing. Plus there is a fantastic restaurant at the train station at Vallorcine. Do check that the lift is working on the internet before committing to the train as it is occasionally closed due to avalanche risk or wind. - [Vallee Blanche](https://www.skibreezy.com/category/vallee-blanche/) - The famous Vallee Blanche is an off piste 20km run from the top of the Aiguille du Midi which loops back into Chamonix. In good snow cover you can ski back into Chamonix itself, otherwise you can get the Montenvers train back down from above the Mer de Glace glacier. This is a great day out for good intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Either join a group or take a private Mountain Guide for safety and to get the most out of your descent. This is not a patrolled or pisted run and it is glacial so there are ceracs and crevasses to avoid. There are also various routes down the glacier which vary considerably in difficulty and gradient. A Private Mountain Guide will take you on a route to match your ability and allow you to get off the standard tourist route. - [Chamonix](https://www.skibreezy.com/category/chamonix/) - Chamonix is in France on the border of Italy and Switzerland. Nestled in the mountains under Mont Blanc it is a winter playground for snow sports and climbing. The town has grown from a farming community into a flourishing winter and summer destination.
