Chamonix is a great place for ski touring (and backcountry snowboarding), simply to get beyond the lift lines or to explore the Mont Blanc Massif. The terrain around the Chamonix Valley is very varied which also makes it a great place to learn. Take a Mountain Guide and get out there for a couyple of days. There are loads of single day tours which take in a bit of climbing, a bit of boot packing, crampon work and rope work as well as navigation. Later in the winter season there are a series of Mountain Refuges open for touring between huts and there is also the famous Haute Route between Chamonix and Zermatt; a 7 day hut to hut trek through the mountains.
