Blue sky powder skiing at Le Tour

Powder skiing le tour

Considering yesterday we were at the same place skiing in poor visibility, what a difference a little sunshine makes. Domaine de Balme has so much terrain to go at we were putting fresh tracks in all day. Even some cheeky pitches right beside the drag lifts. Some areas are not quite as well filled in as last season yet and we did some combat skiing too. Read on…

Fresh tracks at Domain de Balme

Mighty fine powder skiing

Yesterdays snowfall and that which fell overnight saw the avalanche risk settle at 4. Grands Montets had delayed opening and Brevent/Flegere had limited opening. We just managed to drive up to Le Tour without snowchains and (strangely) we were the only vehicle in the carpark (which was in the process of being dug out).

Some of the off piste was wind affected but there was plenty of scope for some fresh tracks. The weather came and went along with visibility and wind.  By midday the wind had picked up enough to make the back chair unpleasant signalling that a coffee was overdue. Still plenty of lines to go at! Read on…

Half term round up for Chamonix skiing and snowboarding

Breezy in powder

February has been an awesome month in Chamonix with all manner of weather. We have had powder skiing in the trees at Les Houches with the Greenwood family. Blue skies and powder at Domaine de Balme. A chalet full of folk on an Introduction to Ski Touring week with Alison and Rob. And a ski tour for Sauze’s Birthday up Pointe de la Croix from Arpy in Italy. Read on…

The return of sunshine

La Cab bar at Brevent

After the unprecidented amounts of snow the sun has reappeared and is making a definite come back. The lift company has opened up the valley and dug out the pistes again. There have been some amazing sights of chairlifts under … Read on…

Freezing conditions return to Chamonix.

Al, Ken & Breezy

To be fair we have had very “mixed” weather recently, and now we are back to the freezer.  The pistes in the valley and in Courmayeur and Les Contamines are is amazing condition; perfectly groomed, soft snow for ripping up. Read on…

Crisp White sheets

Off piste

The sun has finally made an appearance and the mountains are covered in crisp white sheets of snow  In short, all the pistes are in amazing condition throughout Chamonix. To be honest with the depth of snow which has been put down over the last 2 weeks if they were not is good condition something would be seriously wrong.  We have also enjoyed some brilliant powder days off piste. As the sun came out and people could see most of it has been tracked so you have to work a little harder to get freshies, but they are still out there. Read on…

First days skiing of the season Chamonix

Grands Montets Chamonix

On Saturday we skied Grands Montets and were in the lift line as it opened with a few hundred others. We did a few runs off the Bochard to get our legs going and the snow actually got better as the morning progressed. Sunday we thought we would beat the crowds and ski tour up from Le Tour where the lifts are closed. There were probably a hundred cars in the carpark and people all over the hill at Domaine de Balme. The sun shone but the temperature was still bitter with wind at altitude. Great to get the legs going and a very pleasant ski down. Read on…

Sunshine celebrations

Alpage de Balme

Spring skiing conditions with the freezing overnight temperatures rendering the pistes bullet proof and then the sunshine softening the snow by mid morning.  Likewise the off piste has stayed good but keep well clear early in the morning on south facing slopes unless you want to shake a filling loose. A picture is worth a thousand words

Bochard

The snow has kept really well and recently we have seen fresh arriving which is great for both the piste conditions and the off piste too. We have also managed to make the most of the great snow conditions with trips through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Courmayeur and skiing in Chamonix. Read on…
