Chalet girls calendar – Part 2

January

January has always been my favourite month of the winter ski season. Generally cold and plenty of snow. New Years Day is often a great ski day. Most folk are recovering from the festivities of the night before. The slopes are quiet and if we are lucky enough to have fresh snow to play with you can go fresh tracking all morning before anyone else joins in. The whole month of January is pretty quiet on the slopes with minimal lift lines. Having said that, the chalet is usually full. Mostly with repeat clients who also enjoy to good snow conditions with no queues.

Historically January has had the largest snowfalls of the winter ski season. This makes for soft landings for those learning, be they beginners or those honing their freeride tricks off piste.

When the weather permits it is also a great time of the season to dust off the ski touring equipment and start getting some “up hill” fitness going. The cold weather means that when all the snow is tracked out that is accessible from the lift system, there is always some fresh tracks to be found by those willing to put in a little extra effort.

The low temperatures means lots of layers of clothing. Also it suits those who are happy to work a little harder to keep warm. If you have small children January may not be ideal, wait until February when it is warmer and brighter. If skiing is your passion the last thing you want to do is put the kids off because of the cold.

Bring on February!
