Generally if you have combed, groomed snow under your feet you are on piste. Exceptions to that are Chamonix Valley where the piste could be covered in moguls (bumps made by skiers) or it could be an ungroomed run from the top top of Les Grands Montets. If you are on piste there should be numbered ,coloured marker poles on either side designating the difficulty of the piste and counting down until you reach the bottom. The higher the number the further you have to go.
